OVERVIEW
The Immigration Policy Lab at Stanford University generates rigorous research and policy solutions to the world’s most pressing immigration challenges. As the lab's portfolio expands, so has the need for a more cohesive visual system.
As incoming communications manager, I led an audit and redesign of the lab’s public-facing materials—its website, policy briefs, presentation decks, and marketing materials—to better reflect IPL’s rigor and credibility while making key information easy to find and digest.
A review of existing materials and lab member feedback revealed that while IPL didn't need a full rehaul, its branding lacked consistent typography, standardized layouts, and accessibility considerations.
Working in collaboration with a graphic designer and web developer, I updated IPL's visual language and codified it into brand guidelines that fit within the Stanford brand universe while retaining its own personality. I also developed a library of reusable templates and assets and applied the refreshed system across IPL’s website and publications.
For policy briefs, I designed a more structured layout featuring a map, standardized charts, a sidebar with essential details, and a prominent callout with key takeaways. For marketing brochures, I used clearer hierarchy, differentiated content blocks, and stronger imagery to improve scannability for non-technical audiences.
The resulting refresh modernized and elevated IPL’s visual identity, improving clarity, consistency, and accessibility across materials. The new system simplified complex content without sacrificing depth, supporting clearer storytelling and more effective communication in a fast-paced policy environment.
